Custom Size Roller Doors NZ — Everything You Need to Know
Most NZ garages don't have a perfectly standard opening. Whether you're replacing an old door in a 1970s concrete block garage, building a new home with an architect-specified opening, or fitting a door to a shed or commercial space — the chances are you need a door that's made to your exact measurements.
The good news: custom sizing is standard practice for NZ roller doors, not a special order. Both Windsor and Garador manufacture to your opening dimensions, with a lead time that's no different from a catalogue size. Here's everything you need to know.
Are NZ Roller Doors Actually Made to Custom Sizes?
Yes — all roller doors sold through DoorsNZ are manufactured to order based on your specific opening measurements. There are no pre-made doors sitting in a warehouse waiting to ship. Every door is built to your width and height after you place your order.
This means:
- You don't have to modify your opening to fit a standard size
- You're not paying a premium for "custom" — it's just how the product works
- The door fits your opening correctly, with the manufacturer's specified overlap built in
What you do need to do is measure your opening accurately. The manufacturer makes the door to suit your measurements — so accurate measuring is the most important step in the process. If you haven't done this yet, read our step-by-step measuring guide first.
What Size Range Is Available?
The available size range depends on which product series you're ordering. Here's a summary of what DoorsNZ can supply:
Windsor Domestic Roller Doors
- Series A: Opening widths up to 3200mm, heights up to 3200mm
- Series B: Opening widths up to 4800mm, heights up to 4800mm — suits large double garages, high-clearance vehicles, and boat sheds
Windsor doors use 40mm guides, so the curtain sits 40mm either side of your opening. Windlock (wind-rated) guides are 63mm. You need enough side room in your wall reveal to accommodate the guide — typically 80mm each side for standard guides, 95–100mm for windlock guides.
Garador Domestic Roller Doors
- Opening widths up to 3150mm with standard 25mm guides
- Opening widths up to 3130mm with windlock (50mm) guides
- Heights available in standard and custom increments
Note: Garador's maximum curtain width is 3250mm. Because the curtain overlaps the opening by 25mm each side (or 50mm with windlock guides), the maximum opening is slightly narrower than the curtain. If your opening is wider than 3130mm, a Windsor Series B door is the right product.
Commercial Roller Doors
For commercial and industrial openings, widths beyond domestic limits are available. Windsor commercial doors (Series 2 and Series 3) can be manufactured up to 6000mm wide and are engineered for high wind loads. Browse the commercial range or contact us to discuss large-opening specifications.
How Height Is Specified
NZ roller doors are manufactured in a range of standard heights — 2200mm, 2400mm, 2500mm, 3000mm, 3200mm — and can also be made to intermediate heights between these sizes.
If your opening height falls between two standard sizes, the door can typically be manufactured to your exact measurement. The key constraint is headroom — the space between the top of your opening and the ceiling or nearest obstruction above. You need a minimum of 300mm of headroom for a domestic installation, or 350mm if you're adding an automatic opener.
If you have a non-standard height opening, note it when you order and we'll confirm the correct curtain height for your situation.
Does a Custom Size Cost More?
Not significantly. Because every door is made to order, the pricing structure reflects your opening dimensions rather than a fixed catalogue price. Larger doors — wider or taller — cost more than smaller ones, but this is based on material and manufacturing, not a custom surcharge.
Standard domestic door pricing starts from $1,084.10 for a 2200mm high opening. Width affects price incrementally. You can get exact pricing for your specific dimensions through the DoorsNZ online configurator — pricing updates automatically as you adjust your measurements.

What About Unusual Opening Shapes or Situations?
Most NZ garage openings are rectangular and straightforward. A few situations that need extra consideration:
Sloped or Uneven Floors
If your garage floor slopes across the width of the opening, the bottom of the curtain may not seal evenly. This can usually be managed with a flexible bottom seal or by adjusting the installation — mention it when you order and we'll advise.
Very Wide Double Garages
Some double garages have a single opening wider than 4800mm. At this width, a commercial-grade door is required rather than a domestic product. Alternatively, many homeowners opt for two separate doors side by side — one per garage bay — which also makes independent operation and future replacement simpler.
High-Clearance Vehicles
If you're parking a motorhome, boat on a trailer, or tall van, you may need a door height beyond standard domestic sizing. Windsor Series B covers openings up to 4800mm high, which suits most high-clearance applications. For more detail, see our guide on high-clearance garage doors in NZ.
Openings Without Standard Headroom
If your headroom is less than 300mm, contact us before ordering — there are low-headroom installation options available for some door configurations, but these need to be confirmed before purchase.
